Clay Roberts took to the Bainbridge High School Commons on October 17th to a room of over 375 parents and community members eager to hear about the Social Emotional Learning movement happening in the Bainbridge Island School District. Thanks to the generosity of the Bainbridge Schools Foundation and the insight of the Bainbridge Island School District, Clay Roberts has been working with each school and every staff member to assist in implementing a movement that involves teaching to the whole child and prioritizing youth social and emotional health.
In addition to hearing what staff and teachers were learning, parents also heard how they can implement these ideas at home. The night was full of useful tips, strategies, and research on how reducing stress and building community connections can lead to greater happiness and resilience for all of us.
Raising Resilience looks forward to more events like this with parents connecting, community members interacting, and everyone working towards building our island youth up. Clay Roberts is a long-time Island resident and hidden treasure. Clay started his career as a health education coordinator in Seattle before turning to prevention and health curricula development, training and public speaking. Five of Clays’ prevention programs became national models used across the country, including the Natural Helpers program used by Woodward Middle School. He is co-author of a book: Great Places to Learn, How Asset-Building Schools Help Students Succeed. Clay has been a keynote presenter at over 700 international and national events and travels the country consulting with schools and communities, helping them create safe supportive environments and learning opportunities that help kids thrive.
